Most materials can be moulded for the lost wax process. This allows for a wax for bronze casting or resin to be made.
The wax is coated in ceramic which is fired allowing the shell to harden and the wax to burn out. The molten bronze is then poured into the cavity where it takes the shape of the shell.
We cast at The Bronze Art Workshop in bronze and sterling silver.
The metal is chased to remove rough areas where sprues have been attached, these allow for the flow of the metal and the removal of air.
Patinas are then applied to the bronze with either a hot or cold process. This is a chemical reaction and needs time to develop, when the desired colour is achieved a sealing coat of lacquer or wax is then applied.
In this case we wanted to pay tribute to the original which is thought to have been made in 600BC and was discovered in Egypt. It is a traditional liver of sulphur base layered with green and brown patinas and finished with a traditional wax.
This is an example of one of the patinas that can be achieved , please return often to see new works as they are completed. Works can be tailored to your own colour preference.
This piece is not for sale but we recommend going to the British Museum to see the real one if you can!
