Conservation & Restoration

Our conservation and restoration services are led by Isla, who recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Conservation Studies at West Dean College, specialising in metal conservation.

We take a careful, considered approach to conserving bronze and metal objects, preserving their character and history while addressing damage, deterioration and previous repairs. Each piece is assessed individually, with treatments tailored to its condition, material and intended future use.

Good conservation is about making the right decision for the object and sometimes that means doing nothing at all.
Intervention can alter an object’s original material, appearance or evidence of its history, so conservation should never be undertaken simply because a piece looks aged or imperfect. Before any treatment, we carefully consider the object’s condition, materials, history and intended future use.
Where an object is stable and its existing condition does not present a risk, minimal intervention may be the most appropriate approach. In other cases, carefully planned conservation can stabilise deterioration, protect vulnerable surfaces and ensure an object can be appreciated for generations to come.
Our approach is guided by the principle of doing no more than is necessary, while respecting the integrity, character and history of every object.
